April 18, 2006 - Canadian domain names less than .coms in the long run thanks to ICANN policy
ICANN has introduced a new policy that makes Canadian domain names more attractive than ever.
Effective immediately, titleholders that have not paid for their .com domain name renewals in time are subject to large fees. Our .com business partner now charges $100USD for removal of redemption status for a domain name, and some registrars charge as much as $250USD.
CIRA, or the Canadian Internet Registration Authority, is in charge of .ca or Canadian domain names and is governed by Industry Canada and not ICANN.
As a result, .ca Canadian domain names are not subject to such policy as those applied to ICANN domain names from the current generic top level domains .biz, .com, .info, .name, .net and .org.
November 30, 2005 - ICANN Conference underway in Vancouver Canada
A history of the Internet will tell you why ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has always been so heavily based in the United States of America.
ICANN is a non-for-profit agency responsible for releasing domain names to the popular generic top level domain (gTLD) dot-com through corporations known as registrars and registries.
This quarter's official ICANN meetings, sponsored by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority, overseer of domain names in Canada, will be held in Vancouver, Canada to discuss, among many other things, the relationships that ICANN has with its USA corporate affiliations.
A representative of Computer Engineering Inc. operating as DOMAINSunder.ca will be at the domain name conference. "This is a fantastic opportunity for Western Canada and domain names in Vancouver and Canada", says CEO Lowe, "and we will be there to answer anyone's questions".
A representative will be on site starting Thursday and will meet with interested parties at the conference through thier toll-free number 877 807 0777.
September 15, 2004 - Greedy dot-com Domain Name Registration Provider
A web hosting client came to us recently with an unfortunate situation about his International (dot-com) domain name registration with an American domain name hosting service provider.
His domain name service provider did not notify him 7 days prior to this domain name expiry date. During the 30 days domain registration renewal grace period, the American domain name hosting provider requested a payment of $250 USD to be paid in order for him to retain ownership of his domain, even though the domain name was his business' legally registered name.
It was a 1000% payment increase from the price our client had paid for a new dot-com registration.
Unfortunately, this is a troubling trend in the International (dot-com) domain name registration. With the domain name service provider being based in the United States and .com domain names being overseen by an American governing body, retaining your domain name for a reasonable price can be quite troublesome. For businesses that rely on their domain name for business transactions, this can be a hard and expensive hit.
However, Canadian domain name (dot-ca, .ca) registrations are governed by a Canadian body, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). CIRA vigorly enforces the rules and regulations that bind Canadian domain name registrations to protect the Canadian domain name consumer. As such, only authorized CIRA registrars, like DOMAINSunder.ca, are able to provide .ca domain name registrations to Canadians for purchase.
CIRA Communications Director, Gabrielle Ahad, said that he has never heard of any Canadian domain name registrar changing astronomical prices for domain name renewals.
"Purchasing a Canadian domain name will display your Canadian business presence. You will also be able to protect your business and avoid a hard lesson.", says CEO Blair Lowe.
"Not all International domain name service providers charge astonomical prices for domain renewals of recently expired domain names. We have worked with our International domain name registration affiliate for some time now and have had no complaints from our clients."
In the end, the client decided to pass on his dot-com domain name registration and registered with a Canadian domain name registration instead. Computer Engineering Inc. transferred the remainder of this dot-com domain name web hosting to his dot-ca with no additional costs.
September 14, 2004 - Relocation of Computer Engineering Inc. to Downtown Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Computer Engineering Inc./DOMAINSunder.ca announced their relocation to downtown Edmonton, Alberta, Canada from their south Edmonton location.
"Our office relocation was needed to serve our growing number of web hosting, web design, and domain name registration clients in Edmonton, Alberta and Canada better.", says CEO Blair Lowe, "Not only are our staff at Computer Engineering Inc. and DOMAINSunder.ca excited about the move, but our web hosting and web design clients are looking forward to it as well."
Their new location is in the heart of Edmonton downtown on Jasper Avenue (11227 Jasper Avenue).
November 7, 2003 - Search Engine Optimization Services
Edmonton - DOMAINSunder.ca, a Canadian domain registration and web hosting, web design company, now provides seach engine optimization services. Key word Internet market studies start at $2500.00 CAD + GST, and go up to include linking campaigns and other features. "Our Internet market studies are based on real Internet data. This lends itself very well to our search engine optimization service and website design and development branch." says CEO Lowe.
October 24, 2003 - New .ca Domain, Web Hosting Service and Email Service Payment Options
Edmonton - Web banking: we can now accept payment through web banking for .ca domains, and for web hosting and non-international domain name products. If you choose the web banking or online banking option when you register your Canadian dot-ca domain name, we will give you a temporary account number for your first registration. For those with an account with us, please use that number as your web banking account number. We currently accept payment from Scotiabank, TD Bank (easyweb), and CIBC bank. Please call if you need help with your web payments for a .ca domain or other web service.
May 5, 2003 - dot-ca Domain ( .ca Domain ) 2003 Price Drop
Edmonton - In accordance with the CIRA price drop at 22:00 Edmonton time on April 30th 2003, DOMAINSunder.ca is proud to announce lower prices for its customers.
"We have lowered all prices except for the one year price that was raised to better reflect the accounting and communication costs associated with annual .ca domain renewal", said CEO Lowe. "We have very competitive prices, but we aren't going to undersell to the point where we are losing money like some other newer registrars have done.". Parent Company Computer Engineering Inc. has been in business since 1991, and provides customers with a stable choice for registering domain names, providing email for the domain, and hosting websites.
Please see the prices page for details.
March 26, 2003 - New Email Service
Edmonton - DOMAINSunder.ca have announced their new email service. Previously, Computer Engineering Inc., operating as DOMAINSunder.ca, only provided email forwarding services. In February, 2003, DOMAINSunder.ca rolled out a new email server and a service using their tradename "ZEDemail.ca".
"The new service will allow clients to register a domain name, purchase an email service and be able to receive email associated with their domain within 24 hours. This is the last piece of the puzzle for full business support" says CEO Lowe. The new service bills customers on the amount of disk space that they use on the mail server rather than the number of email addresses.
Customers can also manage their email by themselves rather than waiting for someone to add or delete an account. Webmail is also part of the product in case users want to read their mail while not at their desks.
Included in the package is the ability to use the POP and IMAP email protocol that is used by popular email programs such as Outlook, and Eudora.
"Today's businesses need to identify themselves with their own name rather than the name of their ISP", says Lowe, "and by registering their own domain name, and using that name for all their coporate email, small to medium size companies now have the ability to do that at reasonable prices, and with scalability."
January 31, 2002 - Price Drop
Edmonton - In accordance with the advertised CIRA price drop at 22:00 Edmonton time, DOMAINSunder.ca is proud to announce lower prices for its customers.
"This price drop was announced a little early by CIRA, but we expect it to be busy, and catch up any lost sales as a result of the early announcement", says CEO Lowe. CIRA announced its price drop at their annual general meeting in Late 2001, and posted the information prominently so that diligent, would be customers, could have been scared off.
Please see the prices page after 22:00 on January 31st for details.
January 15, 2003 - Expired dot-ca Internet Domain Names Available on a First-Come-First-Served Basis
Edmonton - The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) will release approximately 20,000 expired dot-ca Internet domain names on January 17, 2002 at 19:00 Mountain Time.
Expired domain names are domain names that have not been renewed by their respective registrants. After January 17, 2002, CIRA will release expired domain names on a daily basis.
All expired dot-ca domain names are equally available on a first come first served basis through any CIRA Certified Registrar. CIRA does not grant preferential access to expired domain names to any registrar.CEO Lowe of DOMAINSunder.ca says "We have increased timeout times, and checked over our servers to accomodate increased activity on Thursday Evening. Our low prices, and high service should mean lots of traffic.".
Canadians wishing to verify the status or renewal date of a dot-ca domain name should visit www.cira.ca and enter the domain name (e.g. cira.ca) in the WHOIS tool located on the top right hand side of the screen.

December 6, 2001 - Canadians Prefer Shopping on dot-ca Retail Websites
TORONTO - According to a study to be released today by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), 70% of Canadians would rather do their online holiday shopping on dot-ca websites than on dot-com sites.
Just over 1,000 Canadian Internet users completed an online survey administered by The Strategic Counsel, a Toronto based market research firm, between November 14 and 20, 2001. The survey was commissioned by CIRA to gauge Canadians' attitudes and perception of the dot-ca Internet domain space.
Other survey highlights relating to Canadian Internet users' attitudes are provided below:
- 81% agree that Canadian businesses and organizations should use dot-ca for their websites;
- 71% prefer to use dot-ca website services, rather than dot-com services, because they know dot-ca is Canadian;
- 73% attribute dot-ca websites to Canadian organizations and companies;
- 81% attribute dot-com websites to American organizations and companies;
- 90% believe it is important to have the dot-ca domain as a resource for Canadians;
- 96% believe it is important for dot-ca domain name registrants to meet certain Canadian presence requirements.
Additional survey results are available in the Annual General Meeting section of www.cira.ca.
Dot-ca domain name registrations have grown from 60,000 to 275,000 since CIRA has assumed responsibility for dot-ca domain names on December 1, 2000. It took 10 years for dot-com to reach 800,000 registrations in Canada.
"The dot-ca domain space has seen unprecedented growth this past year and is quickly becoming the Internet domain of choice for Canadians", said Maureen Cubberley, Chair of the CIRA Board of Directors. 'We've always believed that Canadians prefer dot-ca sites for online shopping and services. These survey results are very encouraging.'
Allan Gregg, a pioneer in Canadian public opinion research and Chairman of The Strategic Counsel, will present the surveys finding at:
- Where:Inn on the Park (1100 Eglinton Avenue East), Leaside Room
- When:15:00
- Webcast: Through www.cira.ca (Real Player and Windows Media Player supported)
Mr. Gregg's presentation will follow CIRA's first public Annual General Meeting (AGM). As of this morning, close to 200 CIRA members had registered to attend the event. A copy of Mr. Gregg's presentation is available at www.cira.ca/en/cat_agm

September 28 2001 - Computer Engineering Inc. Launches Domain Registration System
EDMONTON -- Computer Engineering Inc., a local provider of Internet hosting, Web design and e-commerce support, today launched a new web site selling ".ca" domain names, at www.Domainsunder.ca.
"We're very excited about this new site. It's our first major foray into e-commerce," said Blair Lowe, Chief Executive Officer of Computer Engineering Inc. "We anticipate that it will be a significant revenue source for our company."
Domainsunder.ca allows users to register ".ca" domain names, which are regulated in Canada by the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). Computer Engineering Inc. is one of CIRA's Certified Registrars. The site uses state-of-the-art encryption to protect the privacy of customer information and credit card numbers.
Although designed and built in Alberta, the site includes fully bilingual screens for French-speaking users across Canada, via the simple push of a button.
The site accepts Visa cards for payment, although customers also have the option of mailing a cheque or money order to Computer Engineering Inc.'s bricks-and-mortar location. Payment options will be expanded to include other major credit cards and Web banking as well.
The site will be expanded in the near-term to sell the familiar "dot-com" domain names and others as well, Lowe noted. The target market currently is the whole of Canada, although that will be expanded to the U.S., Britain and Australia. The application has the built-in capability to run screens in any language, Lowe added.
